Answer:

Every school child has had to memorize this measurement at some time, but most people have forgotten what the answer is. There are 503 yards in a mile and 3 feet in every yard. So in a mile there are 1509 feet in a mile.

To verify this answer I checked Two dictionairies and an encyclopedia. They all had the wrong answer. I am very disappointed in all the editors of these esteemed publications for letting other answers get past them.
